In Helsinki, May Day begins with the placing of a hat on the Havis Amanda statue at the Market Square at 18.00 on 30 April, after which merry celebration continues in the city centre, on Esplanadi and in the Kaivopuisto park. For those who want a little more action in their May Day celebrations, the Linnanmäki theme park and rides are open. On May Day itself, the traditional student May Day celebration takes place on Ullanlinna hill from 9.00. Traditional activities include speeches, choir songs and May Day brunch. In addition, several parades are also organised in the city, as well as May Day speeches by political parties and May Day music.
The highlight of May Day, however, is a delicious brunch with schnapps and wine in good company. Hotel Arthur serves a May Day brunch on 1 May from 12.00 – 14.00 and from 14.30–17.00. Our head chefs lay on a spread with both hot and cold foods, not forgetting the traditional herring! Mead and doughnuts are also served. You can read the menu in Finnish here.
